Encrypted before upload.
Clear about the details.
Filelane encrypts file contents and filenames on the sending computer. Cloud storage holds encrypted payloads, which recipients decrypt on their own devices.
Between connected computers
Each computer has its own encryption key protected by the operating system’s credential storage. Filelane checks access to transfers and pins connected computer keys. Current apps sign transfer manifests, which bind the sending and receiving computers to the encrypted payload. Before trusting a new identity, compare the fingerprint shown on both computers through a channel you trust. Matching a computer name is not enough. Older unsigned items are labeled separately; a verified connection will require an explicit per-item exception or a new transfer from an updated sender.
Public links
Public-link files are encrypted before upload and decrypted in the recipient’s browser. The complete link contains the information needed to open them. Anyone who has that link can access the files while it is available. Send it privately. Browser downloads trust the Filelane viewer code delivered to them.
What the service still knows
We process account and billing identifiers, computer names and public keys, routing information, transfer sizes, timestamps, and delivery status. Encryption of file content does not make this metadata anonymous. See our Privacy Policy.
Expiry, revocation, and saved copies
Expired or revoked transfers are blocked from future download and their encrypted cloud objects enter cleanup. Recipients can keep copies they have already downloaded. Filelane is a handoff service; keep your own backup of important files.
Updates and your computer
The app verifies update signatures before installing. Mac releases are signed and notarized by Apple. Windows currently remains an unsigned publisher beta; its separate updater signature is still verified. Keep your operating system secure and install updates from our download page or the app.
Security has limits
Encryption cannot protect a compromised computer, a recipient who forwards a file, or a public link shared with the wrong person. Filelane has not completed an independent security audit and makes no regulated-data compliance claim. Do not assume protection against a compromised Filelane identity service or browser viewer.
Report a concern
Contact support with a description and a safe way to reproduce the problem. Please do not include private file contents, passwords, access tokens, or complete public links. We’ll acknowledge and investigate reports.
