THE PRACTICAL DETAILS

Filelane, explained.

Send from the Mac or Windows app. Receive in Filelane or through a public download link. Here is what to install, how accounts work, and what Free and Pro include.

01

Getting started

What is Filelane?

Filelane is a Mac and Windows app for sending files, folders and explicit clipboard items between connected computers. It can also create public file and folder links for people who only need a browser download.

Who needs to install the app?

The sender needs the Filelane desktop app and an account. A connected-computer recipient needs the app and an account too. A public-link recipient downloads in a supported browser without a Filelane account.

Can I use it between my Mac and Windows PC?

Yes, in either direction, including over the internet. Mac requires macOS 13 or later on Apple silicon or Intel. Windows requires Windows 10 or later on x64; the Windows app is currently an unsigned publisher beta.

Do my computers use the same account?

Yes. Use your account for your own computers, name each one, and compare and confirm its verification fingerprint before sending. Free allows two of your own computers; Pro allows ten.

How do I send to a friend or coworker?

They use their own account. Choose Add computer → Connect a person, send the invitation, communicate the access code separately, and confirm the verification fingerprint. You connect selected computers, not every device in the other person’s account.

Are iPhone and Android apps available?

Native iOS and Android apps are not currently available. A phone can receive a public file link through its browser within the browser limits; use a supported computer for larger downloads.

02

Receiving files and clipboard items

How does a public-link recipient download?

Open the complete link, download an individual file or choose Download all files, and save it. Folders and multiple files arrive as a ZIP. Extract the ZIP and use compatible software to open its contents.

Which browser should I use for a large download?

For public downloads over 256 MiB, use Chrome or Edge on a computer. Other browsers support downloads up to 256 MiB at a time. Keep the page open until saving finishes.

Does the sending computer have to stay online?

It must stay online with Filelane running until upload completes. After that, the recipient can download before expiry even if the sender is offline.

Does clipboard sharing happen automatically?

No. Copy a text or image item, choose Send clipboard for the destination, and let the recipient choose Copy before pasting. It is an explicit handoff, not continuous clipboard sync. Clipboard items expire one hour after upload on both plans.

Will editing the source folder update the shared copy?

No. Each delivery is a copy of what you uploaded. Upload a new version and share its new link when the files change. Previously downloaded copies remain separate.

Is Filelane a backup, shared editor or project archive?

No. It is a file handoff service with expiring availability. Keep important source files, required records and backups in your established storage.

03

Free, Pro and billing

What does Free include?

Free is $0 with 1 GB of shared account storage, two of your own computers, three-day file availability and five download sessions per public link. Files, folders and explicit clipboard sharing are included. No card is needed to start.

What does Pro cost?

Pro costs $12 USD per month, or $120 USD per year paid annually. The annual price is equivalent to $10 per month and saves $24 compared with twelve monthly payments. Applicable taxes are shown at checkout.

What changes when I upgrade?

Pro provides 100 GB of account storage, ten of your own computers, thirty-day file availability and twenty download sessions per public link. Clipboard availability remains one hour. Upgrade in Filelane.

Is 100 GB a per-file limit or a monthly transfer allowance?

It is the total cloud storage allowance shared across that account’s active transfers and links, including encrypted data and metadata. It is not 100 GB per file or per recipient. Check unused space in My cloud before uploading. There is no monthly transfer-count cap; technical limits and abuse controls still apply.

What counts as a download session?

Public links have an allowance of download sessions. A session may count even if the recipient does not finish saving. Five Free sessions and twenty Pro sessions do not mean a guarantee of that many completed saves or unique recipients.

Do I have to pay for every friend who receives a file?

A public-link recipient does not need an account. A connected friend can use their own Free account within its limits. Person connections are not paid team seats; sending uses the sender’s storage allowance.

Is shared team billing available?

No. Subscriptions and storage belong to individual accounts. Centralized team billing, pooled storage and member administration are not currently available.

Can I cancel or switch billing periods?

Cancel renewal through the billing portal, or through Settings → Account in Filelane when a billing-period switch is scheduled. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period. Billing-period switches are scheduled for the next paid renewal; the confirmation shows the date and charge. Contact support if you cannot access the app.

04

Privacy and delivery limits

Are files encrypted?

Filelane encrypts file contents before upload. Recipients decrypt them on their device. This does not mean there is no service metadata, or that Filelane has a compliance certification or independent audit. Read the security page for the current explanation.

Who can access a public link?

Anyone with the complete link can access the delivery while it is available. Share the complete link privately with intended recipients. Revoking it stops future access, but cannot remove copies already downloaded.

When do files expire?

File availability starts after upload completes: three days on Free and thirty days on Pro. Clipboard items last one hour on either plan. Download and save the files before expiry.

Can I use a link for a large public audience?

Public links are intended for small handoffs and have limited download sessions. They are not permanent file hosting or a bulk distribution service.

Do I need to enable analytics to share files?

No. Optional website analytics are off until you allow them, and sharing works with analytics off. They do not include your files, clipboard content or private share links.
