DRAWINGS · RENDERS · PREPARED PROJECT FILES

Send architectural drawings with the revision clearly named.

Put the exported drawing set, relevant renders and a short contents list into a dated package. Send it through Filelane’s Mac or Windows app. A client or consultant can open the public link and download in a supported browser without creating an account.

Read the walkthrough
  1. Prepare the fictional Courtyard review — Rev B package: an exported PDF drawing set, a render image and a readme identifying purpose and revision. Example size: 96 MB.
  2. Drop the prepared folder into Public links. Wait for upload to finish before sharing; the files use the sender’s available account storage.
  3. Copy the complete link and send it with the package name, intended purpose and download-by date.
  4. The recipient opens the link without an account and sees the listed files. Filelane lists downloads; it does not preview models or establish formal issue status.
  5. Download and extract the ZIP, then check its contents against the readme. Use the project’s normal process for approvals and archival records.
THREE STEPS TO YOUR NEXT HANDOFF

Name the issue. Check the contents. Send the copy.

The illustration is a synthetic PDF-and-image handoff. It does not represent an approved construction issue, a customer project or a live shared model.

  1. Prepare the agreed deliverables

Export the drawing set and renders from your authoring tools. Put the issue date, revision and intended purpose in the folder name and readme. Check that the files match the delivery you intend.

  2. Upload the completed package

Drop the folder into Public links and wait for upload to finish. Account storage is shared across your active transfers. Copy the complete link and send it to the intended recipient.

  3. Make the receiving step explicit

Give the recipient the package name and download-by date. They open the link, download and extract the ZIP. Ask them to check its contents against the readme; a download does not imply approval.

CHOOSE WHO YOU SEND TO

Your computers. Your friends.
A link for everyone else.

01 · YOUR ACCOUNT

Between your own computers

Sign in to the same Filelane account on your Mac and PC, or on two Macs. Confirm the connection and send to the computer by name. Free includes two of your own computers; Pro includes ten.

02 · SEPARATE ACCOUNTS

To a friend or coworker

Choose Add computer → Connect a person. Share the invitation and separate access code, then compare the verification fingerprint together. They use their own account. Only the computers you connect become destinations; no shared password is needed.

Connected guest computers do not use your own-computer allowance. Transfers still use the sender’s available storage.

03 · THEIR BROWSER

To someone without the app

For files and folders, create a public link. Your recipient downloads without an account. For public downloads above 256 MiB, use Chrome or Edge on a computer; other browsers support up to 256 MiB at a time.

Clipboard handoffs use the app at both ends. Anyone with a complete public link can open its files while it is available.

AN EXAMPLE YOU CAN ADAPT

A client review set, distinct from the working model.

The animation shows a fictional Courtyard review — Rev B package: a PDF drawing set, a render image and a readme. The PDF gives the client a practical starting point without requiring the authoring application. Example filenames and sizes are illustrative.

State why you are sending it: for example, “client review.” Describe what changed from the previous delivery and which earlier package it replaces. Use the project’s agreed document-control process for any formal issue or approval.

A revised package needs a new upload and link. The previous link and previously downloaded copies do not update automatically. Notify the recipient of the replacement through your normal project conversation.

PREPARE A BETTER HANDOFF

Put the issue information beside the files.

A useful transmittal note

  1. Package name and revision.
  2. Intended recipient and purpose of this issue.
  3. List of included files and relevant sheet names.
  4. Changes from, and relationship to, the earlier package.
  5. Required software and a download-by date.

If you need to send editable CAD files

Prepare dependencies in the authoring tool first. AutoCAD’s eTransmit can gather drawings and referenced supporting files into a delivery package; review its report and inclusion settings for your version. Filelane carries that prepared package. It does not find missing external references itself. Autodesk’s eTransmit guide ↗

Before a large model delivery

Confirm format and version compatibility with the recipient. Keep the source project and your required records in their normal location. Public downloads above 256 MiB need desktop Chrome or Edge; expiry starts after upload and is three days on Free or thirty days on Pro.

A USEFUL DISTINCTION

Deliver a copy alongside your project workflow.

Filelane is useful for a prepared drawing set, export package or consultant handoff. It is not a common data environment, live BIM model, drawing viewer, approval system or long-term project archive. A Filelane transfer does not establish which revision is contractually current.

Use your established project controls for permissions, issue status, approvals and retention. Anyone holding a complete public link can access it while available. For repeated app-to-app handoffs to a known consultant, connect their chosen computer through their separate account.

A FEW PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Before you send.

Still have a question?
We’re here to help ↗

Can I send DWG, RVT or IFC files?

You can transfer prepared files, but Filelane does not open or validate models. Agree the format and application version with the recipient and include required dependencies using the authoring tool’s supported workflow.

Are external references included automatically?

Only files in the package you upload are sent. Filelane does not inspect the model and collect external references. Check the prepared package and any authoring-tool report before sending.

Can the recipient annotate drawings in Filelane?

No. The recipient downloads the files and uses an appropriate application. Review comments and approvals belong in your chosen project workflow.

Does it replace our project archive?

No. Files expire after three days on Free or thirty days on Pro. Keep required records and source projects in your established storage and archive.

What should I do when a drawing set changes?

Name the new issue clearly, upload it as a new delivery and send the new link with a note identifying the previous issue it replaces. Already downloaded files remain separate.

Can a consultant on Windows receive files from my Mac?

Yes. Use a public browser link or connect their Windows computer through their own Filelane account. The Windows app is currently an unsigned publisher beta.
