MAC MENU BAR · FILES, FOLDERS & CLIPBOARDS

Share files from your Mac menu bar.

Keep your regular destinations close. Open Filelane from the menu bar, then drop a file or folder onto your other computer or a connected friend’s computer. Use Public links when the recipient just needs a browser download.

  1. Keep your work open. Maya’s Mac is already connected through a person invitation; she uses her own Filelane account. The ribbon is set to While dragging files on Mac.
  2. Start dragging the example Review.pdf file. The ribbon appears; drop onto Maya’s Mac, rather than Public links.
  3. Keep the sending Mac online until the upload is complete. The ribbon shows the transfer progress.
  4. Maya opens your computer’s detail view in Filelane and finds Review.pdf marked Awaiting download. Her account stays separate from yours.
  5. Maya chooses Download and saves Review.pdf before expiry. Your ribbon tucks away, leaving the work window open.
THREE STEPS TO YOUR NEXT HANDOFF

A small ribbon. A familiar destination.

Install Filelane on your Mac first. Connect your own computers or invite a friend before using the computer drop targets.

  1. Choose how Filelane appears

Open Filelane from the menu bar. For a ribbon that appears during a file drag, choose While dragging files in Display settings on Mac. You can also keep the ribbon visible.

  2. Drop onto the right computer

Start dragging your prepared file or folder. Drop it onto a named computer in the ribbon. Check the destination before releasing; the upload starts when you drop.

  3. Let the upload finish

Keep Filelane running and the sending Mac online until the item is uploaded. The receiving person opens Filelane and downloads, or uses their chosen auto-download settings.

CHOOSE WHO YOU SEND TO

Your computers. Your friends.
A link for everyone else.

01 · YOUR ACCOUNT

Between your own computers

Sign in to the same Filelane account on your Mac and PC, or on two Macs. Confirm the connection and send to the computer by name. Free includes two of your own computers; Pro includes ten.

02 · SEPARATE ACCOUNTS

To a friend or coworker

Choose Add computer → Connect a person. Share the invitation and separate access code, then compare the verification fingerprint together. They use their own account. Only the computers you connect become destinations; no shared password is needed.

Connected guest computers do not use your own-computer allowance. Transfers still use the sender’s available storage.

03 · THEIR BROWSER

To someone without the app

For files and folders, create a public link. Your recipient downloads without an account. For public downloads above 256 MiB, use Chrome or Edge on a computer; other browsers support up to 256 MiB at a time.

Clipboard handoffs use the app at both ends. Anyone with a complete public link can open its files while it is available.

YOUR REGULAR HANDOFFS

The next revision is one short trip.

A screenshot for a coworker. A review folder for a designer. A document for your home computer. A saved connection gives each handoff a recognizable destination.

Your friend signs in with their own Filelane account. Their approved computer appears alongside yours; you do not need to share a login or give them access to your other computers.

For a one-off delivery, drop the folder into Public links in the expanded view. Upload it, copy the link and send it through your usual conversation.

A USEFUL DISTINCTION

Menu-bar convenience, beyond nearby sharing.

Filelane uses the internet for transfers between connected Macs and Windows PCs. The ribbon is a shortcut to your chosen destinations; it does not depend on both computers being on the same Wi-Fi.

If you only want a menu-bar shortcut to Apple’s AirDrop, Menu Drop is designed for that job. Filelane is a separate service with its own account, encrypted cloud storage and transfer limits.

A FEW PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Before you send.

Still have a question?
We’re here to help ↗

Can I keep the ribbon hidden until I drag a file?

Yes. On Mac, choose While dragging files in Display settings. The ribbon appears during the drag and tucks away afterward.

Can I send to a friend’s Windows computer?

Yes. Your friend installs the Windows beta and uses their own account. Connect through a person invitation and confirm the verification fingerprint before sharing.

Does hiding the panel stop an upload?

Hiding the panel is different from quitting the app. Keep Filelane running and your Mac online until the upload has finished.

Can the recipient use just a browser?

Yes, for files and folders sent through Public links. Connected-computer and clipboard handoffs use Filelane on both computers.

Does it automatically sync my clipboard?

No. Choose Send clipboard for the item you want to share. The recipient chooses Copy; nothing pastes itself.
