A WeTransfer alternative for recurring desktop handoffs.
Consider Filelane for recurring transfers to your own computers or connected friends, plus occasional browser links. Consider WeTransfer when browser-based sending, a larger transfer allowance or wider link distribution is the priority. The limits are measured differently.

Choose Download for Review round 02.pdf. The earlier revision stays separate. Sending a new delivery does not automatically edit the earlier downloaded files.

- You and Maya have already connected your computers using separate Filelane accounts. Prepare Review round 02.pdf. The earlier Review round 01.pdf remains visible in transfer history, so the two revisions are easy to distinguish.
- Drag the revised PDF onto Maya’s named computer in Filelane. You do not need to create another public link for this connected-computer handoff.
- Keep the sender online until upload completes. The revised PDF is stored encrypted for the receiving computer.
- Maya opens your connected computer’s detail view and sees the revised PDF marked Awaiting download. She can collect it later, before expiry.
- Choose Download for Review round 02.pdf. The earlier revision stays separate. Sending a new delivery does not automatically edit the earlier downloaded files.
Trying Filelane for a recurring handoff?
The illustration shows Filelane’s connected-person workflow. Both people use their own accounts and have confirmed the connection.
Connect the person you send to
Choose Add computer → Connect a person. Your recipient accepts using their own account. Exchange the access code separately and confirm the verification fingerprint together.
Send the next revision
Drop a prepared file or folder onto their named computer in Filelane. The example uses a small review package, within the sender’s available account storage.
Let them collect it
After upload, your recipient can download while the transfer remains available. For someone who does not want the app, use a public link instead.
Your computers. Your friends.
A link for everyone else.
Between your own computers
Sign in to the same Filelane account on your Mac and PC, or on two Macs. Confirm the connection and send to the computer by name. Free includes two of your own computers; Pro includes ten.
To a friend or coworker
Choose Add computer → Connect a person. Share the invitation and separate access code, then compare the verification fingerprint together. They use their own account. Only the computers you connect become destinations; no shared password is needed.
Connected guest computers do not use your own-computer allowance. Transfers still use the sender’s available storage.
To someone without the app
For files and folders, create a public link. Your recipient downloads without an account. For public downloads above 256 MiB, use Chrome or Edge on a computer; other browsers support up to 256 MiB at a time.
Clipboard handoffs use the app at both ends. Anyone with a complete public link can open its files while it is available.
The same collaborator. The next revision.
Imagine a small design review: send Review round 01.pdf in the morning, then Review round 02.pdf after feedback. Maya uses her own account. Her connected computer stays in Filelane, so the second handoff goes to the same destination.
Keep the version number in the filename. The new transfer appears separately in the history; it does not overwrite a downloaded draft. Send “Please use the blue cover for v2” as a clipboard note if that is all the explanation needed.
This is an illustrative workflow, not a customer case study or speed comparison.
If you need to send from a browser, Filelane is not that workflow: its sender uses the desktop app. WeTransfer documents browser uploads and a Mac app, so “desktop app” by itself is not a reason to choose one over the other.
Compare the allowances, not just the number of gigabytes.

Choose for your next month of work.
Consider Filelane when…
You want named destinations for your own computers and friends, deliberate clipboard sharing, and expiring cloud-backed deliveries. Your active transfers fit the account allowance and your public links go to a small audience.
Consider WeTransfer when…
You want browser-based sending, a link for a broader audience, or a paid transfer size beyond Filelane’s shared account capacity. Compare the current plan and expiry controls against your specific delivery.
Clear limits.
A simple upgrade.
One storage allowance across your account.
No monthly transfer-count cap.

Is Filelane’s 1 GB the same kind of limit as WeTransfer’s 3 GB?
No. Filelane’s number is a shared account-storage allowance. WeTransfer’s Free limit is a rolling sending allowance. A larger number in one column does not make them equivalent.
Can I send to someone without an account?
With Filelane public links, yes. The comparison above also links to WeTransfer’s documentation for its browser-recipient workflow.
Is Filelane unlimited?
No. There is no monthly transfer-count cap, but account storage, retention and public-link download sessions are limited.
Can my collaborator use their own Filelane account?
Yes. A person invitation connects the selected computers across separate accounts. You do not need to share a login.
Which is faster?
This page does not claim a speed winner. Actual upload and download times depend on the file, connection and delivery conditions.
