DESIGN DELIVERIES · SOURCE FILES & EXPORTS

Send design files your client can actually use.

A finished design delivery needs more than a source file. Put editable work, ready-to-use exports and opening instructions in one folder, then share it through Filelane. You send from the Mac or Windows app; your client downloads through a supported browser without an account.

The client downloads and extracts the ZIP. Native design files still require compatible software. A corrected v2 needs a new upload and link.

Filelane’s product interface with synthetic files and names. Layout adapts to your screen. Timing is compressed; this is an illustration, not a recording or speed test. Nothing is read from your files or clipboard.

  1. Prepare Studio identity v1 with source artwork, an export, a PDF preview and a readme. This synthetic 48 MB package needs unused account storage plus encrypted metadata.
  2. Drop the prepared folder into Public links. The sender stays online until upload completes; Filelane does not collect design dependencies automatically.
  3. Copy the complete link after upload. Tell the client to open Preview.pdf first and save the files before expiry.
  4. The client opens the browser page without a Filelane account. Files have individual Download buttons, with Download all files for the complete package.
  5. The client downloads and extracts the ZIP. Native design files still require compatible software. A corrected v2 needs a new upload and link.
THREE STEPS TO YOUR NEXT HANDOFF

Prepare it once. Deliver the whole package.

This example uses a public folder link. For an ongoing design collaborator, connect their computer through a person invitation; they keep their own account.

  1. Separate source from ready-to-use files

Save the editable project and collect its required linked assets. Add a PDF preview and the final exports your client expects. Include only fonts and assets you have permission to distribute.

  2. Create one delivery link

Drop the prepared folder into Public links. Check unused space in My cloud and keep your computer online until upload completes. Copy the full link and share it with the intended client.

  3. Explain what to open first

Tell the client to download and extract the ZIP, then start with the preview and readme. They need compatible software to edit native design files. Keep their own saved copy before the link expires.

CHOOSE WHO YOU SEND TO

Your computers. Your friends.
A link for everyone else.

01 · YOUR ACCOUNT

Between your own computers

Sign in to the same Filelane account on your Mac and PC, or on two Macs. Confirm the connection and send to the computer by name. Free includes two of your own computers; Pro includes ten.

02 · SEPARATE ACCOUNTS

To a friend or coworker

Choose Add computer → Connect a person. Share the invitation and separate access code, then compare the verification fingerprint together. They use their own account. Only the computers you connect become destinations; no shared password is needed.

Connected guest computers do not use your own-computer allowance. Transfers still use the sender’s available storage.

03 · THEIR BROWSER

To someone without the app

For files and folders, create a public link. Your recipient downloads without an account. For public downloads above 256 MiB, use Chrome or Edge on a computer; other browsers support up to 256 MiB at a time.

Clipboard handoffs use the app at both ends. Anyone with a complete public link can open its files while it is available.

AN EXAMPLE YOU CAN ADAPT

A brand handoff, with an obvious starting point.

Imagine handing over a small identity project: editable artwork for the next designer, a PDF the client can review immediately, and a PNG ready to use. The animation uses a synthetic Studio identity v1 folder; it is an example, not a customer case study.

Separate those jobs. “Open Preview.pdf first” is clearer than asking the client to guess which design application they need. Name the approved version in the readme and identify any software or fonts they must obtain themselves.

If you correct the work, publish v2 as a new delivery and send the new link. Changing your local source folder does not change the files already shared or downloaded.

PREPARE A BETTER HANDOFF

A small package with a clear purpose.

  • Exports/Logo.pngReady-to-use export for the client

Before you share

  1. Confirm which deliverables the client approved.
  2. Open the export files and check their dimensions and intended use.
  3. Collect linked assets using your design software’s packaging workflow where available.
  4. Remove internal notes and assets you are not allowed to distribute.
  5. Check the recipient’s software and give a clear download-by date.

For an InDesign job

Adobe’s Package workflow collects the document and selected supporting assets; its preflight helps identify missing links and fonts. Review those warnings before sending. Activated Adobe Fonts are excluded from the copied-font option. Adobe’s packaging instructions ↗

For a 480 MB delivery

Use Chrome or Edge on a computer for a public browser download over 256 MiB. The sender needs enough unused account storage for the package and encrypted metadata. Explain this before sending a large folder to someone working only on a phone.

A USEFUL DISTINCTION

A delivery tool for prepared files.

Filelane transfers the files you provide. It does not render design previews, collect missing fonts, resolve linked images or convert a design into an editable format. Prepare those assets in the software that created them.

Use your design collaboration tool for comments, live editing and approvals. Use Filelane when the next job is delivering a finished copy or passing a revision to a connected collaborator. See how folder links and new versions work.

A FEW PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Before you send.

Still have a question?
We’re here to help ↗

Can I send PSD, AI, INDD or other design files?

You can send prepared files of these types. The recipient needs software that can open them. Include linked assets where required; Filelane does not collect them automatically.

Does Filelane resize images?

Filelane sends files rather than generating resized image previews. Choose the image dimensions, color settings and export format in your design software before sending.

Can the client preview the design inside Filelane?

The public page lists files for download. It is not a design preview or approval workspace. Include a PDF or image preview the client can download and open.

Does the client need to install the app?

No, when receiving a public file or folder link. The sender needs Filelane and an account. Recurring connected-computer transfers use the app on both computers.

Can a client send source material back?

They can install Filelane and send from their own account, using a person connection or their own public link. A download link is not an upload request or shared editable folder.

Which plan suits a design delivery?

Free provides 1 GB of shared account storage and three-day file availability. Pro provides 100 GB and thirty days. Check unused storage, recipient timing and download-session limits for the particular delivery.
